Who Knows One?
Echad Mi Yodea means "Who Knows One?" Each verse asks a question — who knows one? who knows two? — and the answer builds on itself, adding a new layer each time, until by verse thirteen you are reciting everything at once, as fast as you can.
The numbers are not random. Each one corresponds to something in Jewish tradition: one God, two tablets of the law, three patriarchs, four matriarchs, five books of the Torah, and on and on. But honestly, by verse ten, most people are just trying to keep up.
(Sing together — or try to. Speed is encouraged. Dignity is optional.)
